Terry White (Chair)
Terry became part of the Misquah community as he saw the positive impact that the Misquah summer camp has had on his son Brennan. The first words that a tired Brennan spoke as he got off the bus 5 years ago were “I’m going back next year!” Terry is a retired teacher of 32 years, a personal fitness trainer, and has been coaching special needs athletes for the past 10 years with Special Olympics in soccer and basketball and with the Capital City Condors for hockey. He has served on the Board of Directors for both the Condors and Special Olympics. Terry is looking forward to working with the board to be able help out with his experience and knowledge. Camp Misquah is where it’s at!
Jon Van Dijk (Treasurer, Interim vice-chair)
Jon has worked as a Chartered Accountant in public practice and industry for over 20 years. Having known several people who were heavily involved with Camp Misquah and witnessing their passion and commitment to Camp, Jon was happy to join the Board of Directors and has served as the Treasurer for the past 14 years.
Fawzi Mankal
Fawzi is a graduate of the University of Ottawa School of Medicine. He maintains a full family practice in Ottawa. His camping career began in 1992 when he first discovered Camp Misquah and was immediately hooked. After working at Camp Misquah for 6 years, he joined the board of directors and was quickly thrown into the role of Chair which he continues to hold today. In 2015, Fawzi purchased the site at which Camp Misquah operates in an effort to preserve the camp program for decades to come. Fawzi hopes his 3 children will eventually grow up to experience the magic of working with individuals with special needs.
Savith Robinson
Savith started working at Camp Misquah in 2014 in positions including kitchen porter, site manager, kitchen manager and business director. Savith is overjoyed with the positive memories that Camp Misquah has to offer, and the lasting friendships that he has been blessed by through the camp experience. He wishes to continue to bring the Misquah Family together and form joyous, powerful and fun memories, while also improving the overall experience for campers and staff each and every day. He proudly sits the facilities committee within the Misquah board of directors.
Darren Theoret
Darren has been involved with Misquah and the site for 30 years. He went to camp site when he was young as a camper, worked for Misquah when he was older, was involved in Camp Bitobi board when they owned the site and continues on the Misquah board. He is a former counsellor and business manager. He knows the site, and how to do things to maintain the camp site. From opening to closing to where the pipes are, Darren is the guy. He contributes his knowledge and skills as chair of the facilities committee of the Board.
Doug Cody
Doug’s son Ben has been attending the camp for almost 20 years. Doug held the position of Fundraising Chair for a number of years before stepping back. He initiated the Trash For Cash program which continues to bring in funds collected from items people no longer need. Doug likes Trivia Events as they are also used to raise funds for the camp while having fun!
Barb Murphy
Barb is a retired teacher, outdoor education specialist and nature travel consultant. She has divided her career between Canada and Australia. During the past 20 years she has been a strong supporter of Camp Misquah as a donor and followed the program with interest as her sister Eleanor was a passionate camper. For Eleanor Camp was the highlight of the year and both Eleanor and Barb appreciated the devotion and kindness of the young staff in devoting their summers to providing such meaningful experiences for disabled youth and adults. Barb has recently joined the board to contribute her expertise to help enrich the Misquah experience.
Mark Wigmore
Mark became part of the Misquah community as he saw the impact the camp had on his kids who were staff and the smiles and pure joy it gave to campers and staff alike. He joined the board and twinned his love of running with Camp Misquah to start Team Misquah fundraising at Race Weekend. Upon retiring from the federal government he agreed to become Misquah’s first Executive Director to help strengthen the organization to help ensure the camp will be there for years to come. His wife, Lorrie, is the nursing advisor for the camp, and they have a cottage not too far from the Camp Misquah.
Eileen Whyte
Eileen Whyte has been volunteering for Camp Misquah since 2019. Her daughter, Ruby, was a Counsellor in Training and then Counsellor. She is a Registered Nurse who worked for 23 years at the Ottawa Hospital, mostly in critical care. Eileen has worked at the Canadian Medical Protective Association for the last 7 years as a Medical Analyst Researcher in the Safe Medical Care Research department. She hopes to focus on the health and safety of campers and staff.
RICK FARRAH
Rick is a retired teacher who taught for 28 years. He has two children and one delightful granddaughter. His son is an avid Camp Misquah camper and has been attending for many years. Rick likes to say that if camp were year round, his son would attend. Rick is hoping to raise funds for the camp.
Kelly McGee
Kelly graduated from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law and has worked in the public sector as a lawyer, chief audit executive and ombudsperson since being called to the Bar of Ontario. Kelly’s daughter Liz has been a Misquah camper for over 20 years. Each year, Kelly has seen Liz’s excitement counting down to a Camp Misquah week and the joyful stories and new friends Liz describes when she returns. As Kelly’s career transitions from full-time public servant to full-time PhD student, Kelly is honoured to be a Board member and looks forward to supporting Camp Misquah.
CRAIG BUCKLEY
Craig Buckley, CEO and Founder of Kettlemans Bagel, was born and raised in the city of Montreal. He always had an entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to share the art of Montreal style bagels with everyone. Over the years, he quickly expanded his company across the Ottawa and Toronto regions. Kettlemans is excited to contribute in bringing awareness to Camp Misquah in the hope to make it one of the finest camps in Canada for children and adults with special needs. Craig and Kettlemans are very happy to be a part and participate in this wonderful non-profit camp for many years to come.
Staff
ERIN FLYNN (EXECUTIVE Director)
Erin Flynn, B.A. Geography concentration in Environmental Studies, B.Ed in Outdoor Ecological & Experiential Education, is a community builder, educator and arts administrator. Her passion for people and the arts have led her on a winding road of discovery. With a long history as Station Manager at CHUO 89.1 FM, Ottawa-Gatineau’s community driven, independent radio station, she has connected deeply with the arts and culture community. Most recently, she has worked with the Ottawa International Writers Festival and Being Art Studio to launch their respective podcast series.
With a background in Environmental Studies and Experiential Learning, Erin is constantly looking for new ways to deepen her knowledge and explore new ways of doing things. Her volunteering experience includes serving as a founding Board Member of Playful Mindset, serving on the Board Of Directors of DARC, and formerly on the Boards of Apt613.ca, House of PainT, and currently as a music writer for earSHOT! She is a juror for FACTOR and former with the Polaris Music Prize.
Adam Ha (Director of Operations)
Adam joined the Misquah family in 2015. He held many positions at camp including Counsellor, Business Director, and Director of Communications. He also served as Director during the summer of 2019. He has served on the Board of Directors for many years including 1 year as Chair. Adam has a vast amount of experience working and volunteering within the Disability and Non-Profit sectors. He hopes to supply guidance with his unique skill set and expertise so Camp Misquah can continue to improve for staff and campers.
Robin Kirk (Camp Director)
Robin joined the Misquah Community back in 2016 as a counsellor and hasn’t been able to stop coming back since. Robin has been in many different roles at camp Misquah including Craft Director, Head Lifeguard, and Assistant Director last summer. Robin is looking forward to bringing all this experience and knowledge from all aspects of camp with her as she steps into the role of Camp Director this summer. Robin will be graduating from Glendon College of York University this June with a Bachelor of Science (Psychology & French Studies) and a Bachelor of Education, and she is excited to start teaching in classrooms in September. Before that though, she can’t wait to be back at Misquah for another summer and to see everyone there!
Dan Lafreniere (Virtual & In-city Program Leader)
Dan is a longtime staff member and former director of Camp Misquah. He cares passionately about the Misquah community and wants to make sure the Misquah spirit lives at camp. He is the face and voice of Misquah Mondays which has kept us connected and smiling since Spring.
JayDE MEDLAND (Communications Director)
Jayde has B.A. in Media, Information, & Technoculture and a diploma in Interactive Media Design. She brings a creative and inclusive approach to communications, with a background in intersectional studies for media relations. Jayde is ecstatic to be bringing the spirit of Camp Misquah online all-year-round across our various platforms and our site.
